To give you an example, Michael Jackson and John Lennon are two of my favorite musicians of all time. I admire their musical talent to no end, and I admire their support for great causes throughout their lives. However, I don't look up to them as "heroes" by any means. Not only is there evidence that they both abused people close to them, but I also acknowledge that I simply don't know them, so I can't make a true assessment of their character. The same applies to presidents. I admire Jimmy Carter, but I don't view him as a hero because he's a human and I don't personally know him. I think he was a much better president than Reagan, but he's still not a "hero," he's a human.
